To find your code, look at the bottom of the can, at the first four numbers of the second line:

If you have questions about this voluntary withdrawal, please call Proctor and Gamble (Iams) at 1-877-894-4458.
And, our kudos to Seattle Dogspot, who did some sleuthing and discovered something quite odd about this recall. Namely, that "Iams made no mention of the recall on its website."
The Dogspot writer then posted a message on the Iams Facebook page, asking if it was going to post info about the recall on its website (the posting, you should know, first appeared on the PetSmart corporate website).

Dogspot received this response:
"Robert, thanks for your post. We've requested retailers to remove a few lots of Shakeables treats from their shelves because they have the potential to get moldy. Clearly, these do not meet our quality standards. We consulted with the FDA before we took any action and have followed their guidance on proper notification procedures. If you have more questions, please give us a call at 1-877-894-4458. Janet"

All well and good, but there's still nothing about the recall on the Iams site.

It Pains Me to Post This: Another Pet Food Recall

This from the Natura Pet website:

Dear Natura Family,

As pet parents and dedicated pet health advocates, it pains us to inform you of the first recall in our company's 21-year history.

During a recent random sampling, the FDA confirmed the presence of salmonella in one of our products. We take this extremely seriously, because your pets are like ours – they're part of the family – and we aren't taking any chances. As a result, we have voluntarily recalled a number of our products as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there have been no reported animal or human health issues associated with these products, and we have confirmed that this is not a widespread issue.

Natura was founded on the commitment to provide the healthiest natural pet food in the world. As Natura employees who live this commitment every day, words cannot express our disappointment with this finding. We place quality as the cornerstone of our products. It is a process of ongoing improvement, and we will continually review and raise these standards. Unfortunately, salmonella and other contaminants pose a great challenge to the food industry, and no company is immune.

We want to assure you, our valued customers, that we are more committed than ever to animal and human safety. We have fully investigated and identified the cause of this incident. Our production is ongoing, and you can continue to feed any Natura products outside of this incident with confidence.
We know that trust is earned. This incident further fuels our passionate commitment to your pet's health and safety. We promise to demonstrate this commitment through our actions now and in the future.
See below for details on the recall products. If you have a product included on this list please contact us at http://www.naturapet.com/about/contact-us or (800) 224-6123.
Sincerely,
Employees of Natura Pet Products

Recall Alert: Steve's Real Foods' Raw Turducken Patties May Contain Salmonella

The raw food maker pulls five-pound bags of Turducken Canine Diet over Salmonella fears.
 |  Mar 12th 2013  |   0 Contributions

Steve's Real Food of Murray, Utah, a maker of raw dog food, is recalling five-pound bags of Turducken Canine Diet (eight-ounce patties), due to potential contamination of Salmonella.

The patties were distributed to retail stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, California, Minnesota and Tennessee.

The "potential for contamination" came to light after routine sampling of one bag by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

According to the FDA, "pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and have these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian."

Interestingly, Steve's Real Food CEO Gary Bursell says the problem could be the result of a problem with the bags and is not a sanitation issue, according to Pet Product News.

“We use a biodegradable film on the bags, and we've had problems sealing the patty bags, not the nuggets,” Bursell said.

“We sanitize our production facility between every product run,” he adds. “Our plant operates just the same as any human food facility, and everything we've got out there is clean stuff.”

The recall affects about 240 bags, or about 1,200 patties. The recalled product comes in green-and-cream-colored biodegradable film bags with lot number 209-10-27-13, with an expiration date of October 27, 2013.

Call Steve's Real Food at 801-540-8481 if you have questions or concerns.

Sorry Folks, Still Another Pet Food Recall

Bravo Recalls Raw-Food Diet Chicken Blend Tubes

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture detects salmonella in a batch of the product.
 |  Mar 15th 2013  |   0 Contributions

Bravo is recalling two-pound tubes of Bravo's Raw-Food Diet Chicken Blend for Dogs and Cats because of the presence of salmonella.
The recall affects only those tubes made on June 14, 2012, and no other sizes or Bravo products are involved. Look for the ID code 6 14 12 on the white hang-tag attached to the bottom of the plastic film tube. The tubes went out nationwide to distributors, retail stores, and Internet retailers.
While Bravo's own third-party testing did not detect salmonella, routine testing by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture done on samples collected from a single retail location tested positive for presence of salmonella, according to the FDA
There have been no reports of illness.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian."
Obviously, a raw food product containing chicken is something to handle carefully, but Bravo appears to have a good system in place, despite this episode. According to its Quality Assurance page, every Bravo raw diet product is sent to an independent laboratory, Northeast Labs, and tested for the presence of bacteria -- and the results of those tests can be sent to customers.

"No product leaves our plants until we receive confirmation the the product has tested to be free of bacteria," it reads. "We do not subcontract production of any of our products to outside third-party sources. We carefully select the sources from which we buy the raw ingredients, we control how it is handled after delivery to our plant, we control every step of the manufacturing process, and we use human grade ingredients and no animal by-products in any of our formulas."

I Can't Believe It

I have written a post yet this month. Why, I have no excuse. I kept meaning to, but it just slipped my mind.

Well, I do have some exciting news to share. A couple weeks ago I was contacted by a cousin on my mother's side of the family. My sisters and I knew we had cousins but we didn't know how to get in touch with them because we thought that all of our mother's siblings were deceased. We were wrong!

Turns out that one of her older sisters is still alive and her daughter was the one who contacted me through Ancestry.com. I had just rejoined, I would say probably the day before. The information I had on our family tree had been up there for awhile though. The weird thing was that she had done a search before but that information never came up; maybe because I let my membership lapse, but as luck would have it and the good Lord saw it fit, we were reconnected.

It's been interesting passing information back and forth. We've learned some facts about our mom's childhood, which unfortunately was not a happy one. Now we know why she and apparently her sister refused to talk about it. We also learned some things about our grandparents. We also shared pictures with each other. It was fun seeing the family resemblance.

It was a really nice surprise and I hope we stay in touch with each other. We were never close to anyone on that side, obviously, but hopefully now that will change.
