Merry Christmas

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Blessed and Happy New Year.

Friday, December 11, 2015

Hello!

Hello everyone.

Sorry I haven't written lately. I can't say it's because I haven't had time, in fact, I did start a post about a week ago and then I got busy decorating the house.

I don't know about you, but I'm the type of person who, if I'm not satisfied with the way something looks, I'm not satisfied until it's fixed to my satisfaction. Well, it was that way with our faux fireplace. It has a flat front, so making it look like a real fireplace was something I really wanted to find a way to do.

Dave didn't want to cut out a section of the wall because it's load bearing and he would have had to brace it. There was also an outlet, which would have meant moving wiring.

So, what did I do, I figured out how to draw and paint a 3-D picture that looked like the inside of a fireplace. Unfortunately, I wanted to do it with that textured paint, but one can didn't go as far as I had hoped, so I painted over that with black that I had on hand. Before I did any of that though, I covered over the grout/cement lines with painter's tape cut in small, skinny strips. Before the paint was completely dry and because I'm also an impatient person, I peeled the tape off and then let it dry more. I had bought some grey craft paint to paint in the grout/cement lines and then let it dry a little more before hanging it in the spot that would have been the interior of the fireplace. I screwed it in so that it would stay with screws that were dark enough to be unnoticed. We had bought those type of electric logs last year that light up but don't heat to put in front of the supposed to be opening, so now they look like they're sitting in the fireplace. It's not perfect, I made a couple minor mistakes and later on, I may change it, but right now I'm pretty satisfied with the way it looks. Here are a couple pictures.

                                             Before                                              After

What do you think?

Aside from that, life has been good. We are very blessed.

Not that bad

Saw the damage to Dave's car for the first time last night after he came home from work. He had gone out to take some pictures of it for insurance purposes. It didn't look as bad as I originally thought, but it's still pretty extensive. Thank goodness he can still drive it. But of course, we have to wait to see what the insurance company says.

Not a Good Start to the Week, a Rant!

Yesterday wasn't a great day.

Well it started out great, sun shining, warm temps, got laundry started, dropped David off at work, and then dropped a suit off at the cleaner for Dave. All was well and then I went to the gym, which is where it started not going so well. I had emailed the owner/my trainer that morning to remind him that he hadn't sent my take home PDF from last week so that I could do the workouts on my own this week.

First, I walked in and was about to check in, couldn't because the owner was talking to two women and told me that he would check me in, don't know if he ever did. It took me a second to comprehend what he had said, but then I excused myself to get past the one woman and went to put my stuff away. That was when I heard him say,"Sorry about that."

Okay, I didn't think too much of it and then checked my email. He still hadn't sent me my take home PDF from our sessions the week before that I had emailed him about that morning. Our last session was Thursday morning and it was now Monday afternoon, WTH?! But, I went about my business and did the treadmill which is what I do on Mondays if I go in.

On the way out, his partner didn't seem too thrilled to see me either, but did tell me to have a nice day. Maybe I imagined it, I don't know. He was on the phone, so I said nothing to him. Usually he acknowledges me and I say goodbye, but not yesterday. I was starting to get ticked by then.

On the way home, I started fuming, I was pissed to say the least. I mean, I am a paying client; not only do I pay a monthly membership fee, but I also pay for the personal training on top of it. Luckily it was a good 20 minute drive so I was able to calm down by the time I got home and finish the laundry that I had started before I left. I also had some yogurt. And yes, I soothed my bruised feelings with a sweet treat as well.

Dave came home from work and all was well, that was until he left to pick up David from work. He wasn't that far from the house, just up the road in fact when a deer ran out in front of him from his left side. He told me that he would have been able to avoid hitting it but that his car slid on the loose gravel. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, but the car was damaged. Thank goodness for insurance, but unfortunately for the deductible. I guess I'll find out when he gets home to see if he called them this morning.

Oh, and guess what, after a second email from me this morning, I finally received my take home PDF. It's about friggin' time!

I'm hoping today will be better. Hope yours is too.

I'm getting New Glasses!

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday because I had an eye appointment. I did make it today though.

Anyway, I'm getting new glasses. I usually do every couple years. Since I'm getting the same type of lenses I have now, anti-scratch and glare, transistion, they were a little more than I wanted to spend but they're worth it.

I  had a hard time picking out frames. I had gone in with my heart set on red, I don't know why because I haven't found a pair yet that look good on me. I also wanted metal, but they had so many nice plastic frames, that I almost picked a pair of those. With the cold weather we get here in Iowa though, I was afraid that plastic ones would break which has happened before.

I was able to find metal ones that I did like though, in green. Not a dark green, but a really pretty green that really brings out the blue of my eyes. I can't wait to get them.

They did have the same frames in blue, but they were too much like the ones I have now and I wanted something different. They did have a pair of orange and purple ones, but although they looked good on me, they were plastic frames and aren't the Bronco's colors orange an purple, or are they orange and blue? Since I'm not a Bronco's fan, well...

As far as the gym, my back was hurting but I was still able to get my workout done. I did cut the time I spent on the treadmill short though. I need to get Dave to crack my back when he gets home.

I really enjoy going there. The owners make it fun. One of them is my personal trainer. He's certified, so he knows what he's doing.

I've been neglectful of my blog

Looks like I haven't written anything since May. In fact when I went to get on it earlier this evening, it didn't come up, I had to search for it. I thought they had deleted it, but thankfully, they didn't.

The biggest thing I've done is join a gym and start training with a personal trainer. Until I started keeping track of what I was eating though, I wasn't getting the results I wanted, but now the pounds are coming off, so I'm happy.

We lost the second of our three ponies, War, last month. He was also my favorite. Now we're down to one.

The pups are all doing fine. Max's allergies are really bothering him this year, even with the prescription he's on. They're saying that it's been because of all the rain we've gotten. which has been quite a bit. They're saying that we're supposed to have above average precipitation this winter, so we'll see.

I just wanted to catch you all up on things, but it's late, so I will sign off for now. Good night and sleep well.

The Adventures of Me

I didn't tell you guys about my adventures on Thursday, did I?

I had one of those "woman things" scheduled, but in order to get a 3D one, I bet you guessed what it was, I had to go up to Des Moines to have it done.

Well, being that I had never been to that particular part of town, I smartly Googled and printed out the directions so I wouldn't get lost, wasn't that smart of me?  :)

Anyway, I made it to the area okay, no problem, plenty of time until the appointment. Well, finding the address was another story. I kept driving around in circles and in the process, passing where I needed to be without realizing it, over and over again. If I had just read the front of the building sooner, I would have known, but instead, the more I drove around, the more frustrated I became. I finally saw a lady walking and backed up until I was next to her and able to lower my window. She was wearing earbuds, so I didn't even think she noticed, but she did tell me where it was that I was looking for. When I saw the name of the building, the light of recognition dawned, "of course, I should have known that's where it would be, duh!" I did make it on time, which for that I was grateful thanks to leaving home with plenty of time to spear. The restored Victorians I saw while I was driving around though had my mouth watering, wishing I lived in one. They were so beautiful.

Before I headed home, I went to one of the malls and stopped at Bath and Body Works for some shampoo I had from one of the hotels we stayed at and fell in love with. Unfortunately it had been discontinued, must have been an old sample, but I did find a similar one and bought it. I also stopped in a few more places before leaving the mall and almost bought another pair of shoes at Penney's, but decided against it, so I headed home.

On the way home, I kept looking at my gas mileage gauge, or so I thought and kept seeing the number dropping and the farther it dropped, the more ticked off I got. I had just had new tires put on the car the week before and kept blaming it on the guy who replaced the tires, saying to myself that he must have done something to make my mileage drop when he changed the tires. What, I didn't know, but that had to be it! It wasn't until I was off the freeway and on the home stretch that I looked at the gauge again and saw RANGE written above the numbers, I hadn't been looking at the mileage gauge at all. When I switched over to it, I saw a much better number.

I told Dave about it when I got home and he had a good laugh, but I didn't mind. By that time I thought it was funny too.

Happy 15th Birthday Rolli!

Today is the day we celebrate Rolli's 15th birthday, since we don't know the exact date in April she was born.

Happy Birthday to our sweet, bossy little girl!

Almost the End Of March...

...and I've written only one post. :(

Not good and I really have no excuse. As you can see, I did redecorate though. I wanted something springy looking, not boring or depressing. I may change it again, we'll see.

Not much happening here. The weather has been really nice, that was until today, but we are getting some much needed rain. Since the temperature is right at the freezing mark right now, it's actually freezing on the trees. You can tell when you look at our little crab apple tree here in the front yard. The bad thing is that my lilac bushes have started to bud and are getting ready to bloom soon. I hope this doesn't hurt them.

Speaking of which, anyone know what might keep a lilac bush from blooming. One of my old fashioned ones by the walk coming from our driveway has quit blooming and the other hasn't bloomed at all yet and it's been several years since I planted them. I wish I knew why. I guess I'll have to look it up to see if I can find an answer.

All of us here have been battling bronchitis that David caught at work. He went to the doctor for his and was put on antibiotics. Dave and I haven't, but we're pretty much over it now. I do still have a slight cough, but it's not nearly as bad as it was. I do have a doctor's appointment next week for something else, so I'll ask the doctor about it then. It's not causing me to lose sleep and I very seldom cough during the day now, so I'm good.

I finally bought a DNA test for Max to see what breeds make up our little pesky pup. :) I have it ready to go out in the mail, I just have to put it in the box. I hope they take it, otherwise I'll have to wait to take it to the post office when I take David to work tomorrow. I can still kick myself for not doing one on Jake when I had the test sitting here, but there's no use in dwelling on it since there's nothing I can do about it now.

But I am curious about what kind of dogs make up Max. I'm pretty sure that he has Jack Russell in him and my sister thinks that he also has beagle, so we'll see. All I know is that he can be a little stinker at times but he can be a little sweetie too.

We bought Angel a new doggy bed last week and she loves it. It's bigger than the other one she had plus it's one of those orthopedic ones. This one she can stretch out on without hanging partially off of it. She can even roll over onto her back when she wants. We have it placed so that she can watch TV when she wants to, but she mainly snoozes out on it. Rolli has tried to get her off of it by growling at her, but she's having none of it, plus Rolli already has an orthopedic bed which was originally bought for Jake, but he never used it.

We got TV service through our fiber optics from our phone company. I can now watch the same channels that are available on cable and satellite. Unfortunately the Animal Planet isn't available on our package, so I still can't watch the Eukanuba Dog show. It's not until December, so maybe they'll add it before then.

Well, that's about it for this time. I hope everyone is doing great and having a great day.

Until next time...

In Like a Lion...?

Which is it; in like a lion, out like a lamb or in like a lamb, out like a lion?

Whatever the saying is, it is March 1st already. This year it just came in, no lion, no lamb, just March.

Next weekend we turn our clocks forward one hour. This was done to supposedly help the farmers in their planting, but right now with as cold as it's been and the ground being frozen, there's not much a farmer can do as far as planting. But I do have to admit, I like it anyway. I love the longer days.

I used to hate getting out of work on Sundays at 6:30 at the mall I worked at in Virginia Beach and it being dark already. I hated that. It was so much better stepping outside and seeing the sun shining. I don't work at that mall or anywhere else for that matter anymore, but I still like going outside at 6:30pm and seeing the light instead of the dark.

I just remembered earlier today that it's been 41 years today since I met the guy who three years later would later introduce me to Dave, well he gave Dave my address and told him that I like to either write letters or get them, I can't remember. He passed away a couple years ago, so sad.

As far as Dave and I go, the rest they say, is history. We just celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary this past Wednesday, February 25, so I guess you can say that things worked out. It snowed, which isn't the first time that's happened, so we didn't go anywhere and thankfully we didn't get as much snow as they first predicted. But we had a nice quiet evening at home and Dave cooked me dinner. :)

Eagle Watching From My Living Room Window

How convenient is that?

That's what I've been able to do for the last week. We've had about a dozen bald eagles hanging around our property for the last couple weeks and the other day I decided to see if I could take a picture with my little Kodak Easy Share 12 pixel camera. This is the result.

This one was in a group of trees I don't know how far west of the house, but we are able to see them from our living room window. There was another with it earlier, but that one flew to another location.

Okay, this one was taken from my car but it was right before I pulled into our driveway. The eagle was sitting in trees north of our garage which is right next to our north property line.

Seeing the eagles is the biggest highlight of our winters around here. It's also one of the things I love about living here.

Just Shut Up and Let Me Be Mad!

Yesterday I had stripped the bed, washed everything that had to go back on it, blanket, quilt, etc. I was happy, in a great mood and looking forward to going to bed in a newly made one.

Zoom to last night, I go in for something, not ready to go to bed just yet and what do I notice, one of two out of four of the cats had thrown up on the bed. 'mad'

The reason I said one of two is because the only cats that sleep on our bed during the day are Oreo and Patches, so I knew it had to be one of them. Okay, it wasn't that bad, so I cleaned it up and went back into the living room.

Zoom to bedtime; I go to brush my teeth and to generally get ready for bed. I glance at the bed and disaster,  they did it again only this time worse! I couldn't just clean it off, I would have to change the quilt.

I lost it, meaning I had a freakin' fit! Let the tantrum begin! I was cussing and screaming. I was raising hell! I had just finished getting it all nice several hours before and now I had to put on a new quilt.

I went to the dryer where the previous quilt was and it wasn't totally dry; another angry tantrum. Dave came over and tried to hold me the whole time telling me to calm down, not what I wanted to hear! I pushed pass him, went back into the bedroom and screamed, "How come everyone else can get mad, but I can't?!" He actually told me to take it outside. The audacity!

Oh yeah, in the process of my fit, I also told David that he had better turn in his phone, which he is supposed to do at 10:00 each night otherwise he would stay on it all night, or I would break the damn thing. Dave told him that he'd better do as I said, smart man.

Anyway, I had another quilt that I was able to put on the bed and did later apologize to Dave, but damn, I felt good after. I had been frustrated for awhile and just needed to let off steam and explode. It was a long time coming. I mean, it's not like I threw and broke anything, not that I didn't want to.

Be Careful of What You Wish For Or Four Wheelin' in a Front Wheel Drive Car

I really need to be careful of what I wish for.

Last week I wished that we would get a decent snow fall, Saturday night into Sunday we got nine inches. When they plowed the roads they didn't throw down any gravel like they used to and the snow left on them turned to ice This morning we got another three or so inches, plus heavy winds.

When we get heavy winds, the road that ours connects onto gets a snow drift that until you get right up to it, you don't realize how deep it is.

Well, my car is now sitting in at least two feet of snow that even our neighbor with his 4x4 truck couldn't get me out of.

He also told me that if I called the county and they were in the area, they would pull me out. Well guess what, I called and they're not in this area.

I really should have known better. 'sigh'

The county called me back and said the driver cleared around my car. Well, he cleared in front of it, but not behind. Luckily for me, the mail carrier had just stopped at our house when I was walking up to get it, so he helped me dig out around it and get the car out.

I went down the other road and turned around and who do I see stuck where I was before, but Dave. I tried backing up and yep, you guessed it, got stuck again.

Dave got himself out and tried to get me out and after a couple hours, was finally able to. We went south down the other road I turned around on and after four wheeling in our front wheel drive cars, made it home about ten minutes ago. Needless to say, we probably got enough exercise to last us until spring.

Next time I'll know better.

Sunday, February 1, 2015

Finally!

A decent snowfall, but unfortunately along with it we're now getting blizzard conditions thanks to high winds.

We did end up getting around seven or so inches though. We should end upo with some pretty high snowdrifts.

Dave had David call off from work so that neither of us had to drive him to work. Last night Dave was supposed to pick him up, but David called at 9:00 and said that he didn't know when he was getting out and would take a cab home. He didn't get home until 12:30. Don't know why it took that long since he said that the cab got there about 10:30, unless the driver had a couple stops to make first and also took his time due to the conditions. David said that they were pretty bad. Thank God he made it home safe.

The scraper just came up our road. I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow. He even scraped the end of the driveway.

Anyway, here are a few pictures I took this morning before it started blowing around.

Back on the Bandwagon Again

Yep, I like thousands of others, gained weight over the holidays, so I'm back to keeping track of what I eat and exercising more.

Yea right, me exercise more, sure. Where's a sarcastic smilie when you need one?

Actually I do intend to exercise, I just haven't started yet, but I have been getting into the habit of walking more, even around the house, which considering the temps have been pretty low, that's about all I've been willing to do.

It's a start though and just keeping track of what I eat is a huge help. Unfortunately though, over the holidays I ate a lot of sweets and it's really been hard for me to shake the habit. I'm trying, okay, not hard enough, but I will shake it eventually. I did before, so I can do it again.

Are you trying, or have you been successful in losing weight? If so, what is working or worked for you?

We're Having a Freeze Wave, An Artic Freeze Wave...

The Temperature ain't rising, it is a bit surprising...

Well, it is winter after all, but still, this is a bit too cold. Some schools in the state had even called school off a couple days ago because the temperature wasn't expected to go above zero. Now that my friends, is cold.

As far as snow, we haven't gotten a lot, an inch or two here and an inch or two there. But with temperatures as cold as they've been, it's best that we don't get a lot of snow, because to top off the really cold temps, we've also had a lot of wind. We've had winds between 15 and 25mph with gusts as high as 37, so it's bad enough being out in that, blowing snow would make it all that much worse.

Would you believe that tomorrow is supposed to get up to 23ºF and people are looking forward to it!

Me, I'm glad the days are getting longer.

Party Like it's 2015, or Not...

Happy New Year, everyone. Hope your first day of 2015 has been good.

Me, I spent it taking the tree down and reorganizing the decorations. I still have to take the outside lights down, but they're only on the three bushes out front, so it won't take too much time. I'll do that tomorrow. Saturday we're supposed to get snow and after that bitter cold with wind chills as low as 20 to 30 below zero. There is no way I want to be out in that taking down lights.

But other than that, today has been really relaxed. Dave made a ham for dinner which turned out great. Now I'm sitting here in my chair watching Big Bang Theory.

Good night everyone. Have a good night.
